The museum is located in the old Keystone School. The school was built in 1899. Keystone is home to Carrie Ingalls Swazney. Carrie is Laura Ingalls Wilder's little sister. The museum has many artifacts from the Ingalls family. The museum also has local, mining, and Mount Rushmore history. Upstairs there are two classrooms for the children as well as adults to experience what school was like many, many years ago. The museum is free, but we do take "milk money" donations.

If you're into Wild West-themed shops and "attractions" then you'd find plenty to do and see. There's a strip but it all felt very tacky and inauthentic to us. Very tourist-driven. Mount Rushmore is just up the road from Keystone so if you'd be able to get up there, that's a must. Our must-see in Keystone was the Historical Society's Museum because it has a collection of Carrie Ingalls' belongings. Even that was a little sad in terms of how it was curated and presented. Be sure to check their hours though before planning a visit.
