Yankees-Red Sox still gets fans talking and draws TV ratings, so the rivalry is far from dead. But it's missing a few key ingredients.
Pedro Martinez ’s time with the Red Sox came at the peak of Boston’s rivalry with the Yankees. So when the former pitcher-turned-analyst compliments New York, fans take notice. Martinez had some positive comments as the Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals, 10-2, on Tuesday.
Dobbins mentioned that his father, Lance Dobbins, was "really good friends" with Yankees great Andy Pettitte and had a short career with the team before becoming a die-hard Sox fan: “He was actually drafted twice by the Yankees,” his son said. “Signed with them his last year, and then he got traded over to the Diamondbacks.”
The Red Sox have four titles since 2004 and the Yankees one. By that measure, Boston has been the better franchise. But in 2025 the old rivals exist in vastly different worlds.
As for Pettitte, the legendary Yankees left-handed pitcher said that “neither he nor anyone he asked in his family remembers Lance Dobbins,” Sherman wrote.
