Tons of rock and soil roared across Colorado Highway 96 west of Pueblo Sunday afternoon as the hillside above the intersection with Colorado Highway 165 gave way.

An active rockslide has closed the junction of Highway 96 and Highway 165 for safety concerns on Sunday, Dec. 29, around 3:30 p.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). According to COTrip,

Cameras were rolling when a massive rockslide buried a Colorado highway Sunday. Sierra Wright was approaching the intersection of Highway 96 and 165 near Westcliffe when she noticed people were stopping to take photographs of the budding rockslide.

Geo-technical crews will assess the mountain side and ridgeline above CO 96 Monday to determine the stability of the mountainside for clean-up. Motorists will encounter the closure of CO 165 MP 28 and the closure of CO 96 between Wetmore and Westcliffe.
