Discovery’s “Shark Week” has a rival — National Geographic’s “SharkFest,” which also has hours of sharky content. There's also the unconnected shark horror comedy “Hot Spring Shark Attack” and a movie earlier this summer that added a serial killer to a shark movie — “Dangerous Animals.”

Between Discovery’s Shark Week and National Geographic’s SharkFest, for decades, shark-related programming has been the apex predator dominating TV in the hot season. “It is our Super Bowl,” Joseph Schneier, the SVP of Production and Development at Discovery, told The Post.

Now a bonanza of viewership, the 37-year-old event that launched as a meager presentation of 10 basic programs and has also courted detractors over the years.

July 20-26 marks Shark Week 2025, an annual celebration that takes place on the Discovery Channel. Throughout the week, the Discovery Channel plays a number of education- and entertainment-based programs to curb misconceptions around the water-based animal.

Shark Week 2025 officially kicks off on the Discovery Channel Sunday, July 20 at 8/7c and over the course of a week of special programming, 20 new releases will premiere on the popular network.
