A man accused of having a machine gun at Tuskegee University during a hail of gunfire that left one man dead and at least 16 others hurt told a federal agent that he fired his weapon during the shooting,

A Montgomery man arrested following the mass shooting at Tuskegee University initially denied firing his weapon, but later told federal investigators he did fire his gun but did not shoot anyone, according to federal court records.

Tuskegee University fired its security chief after a shooting killed one person and injured 16 others on Sunday.

One person was killed on the campus of Tuskegee University, after dozens of shots were reported fired after midnight. According to Tuskegee spokeswoman Thonnia Lee, the person who was killed was not associated with the university.

The shooting, which also wounded 12 people, happened early on Sunday as crowds gathered at the historically Black school to celebrate the final day of its 100th homecoming week.

A shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama during a homecoming celebration on Sunday resulted in the death of an individual and 16 injuries, the university said. Twelve people were wounded by gunfire, and four others sustained injuries not related to the gunshots, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said in a Sunday afternoon update.
