Boeing and Airbus are moving into the production phase for their next-generation freighter aircraft, which they hope to release to customers later this decade.

Boeing has kicked off production of its newest freight carrier, the 777-8, the Seattle Times reported on Tuesday.

EVERETT, Wash. — Boeing officially kicked off production of its newest cargo jet, the 777-8 Freighter, at its Everett factory Monday by drilling the first hole into one of the plane’s wing spars.

Spar assembly is the traditional start of production for Boeing airplane models. The 777-8 Freighter wing spar sits on the production line on Monday, July 21, 2025 in Everett, Washington.
