HONG KONG — A set of 1,400-year-old Buddha statues in southwest China was damaged by villagers who painted them with bright colors to “redeem a wish to the god,” officials said.
The mummy inside the gold-painted papier-mache statue is believed to be that of Liuquan, a Buddhist master of the Chinese Meditation School who died around the year 1100, researchers said.
When finished, both had smiles. Buddha's was more than 2 feet wide. The statue's other features are humongous, too, with a big toe more than a foot wide and a thumbnail 3½ inches wide.
The statue is now being housed in an exhibition called MUMIAVIAG, aka Mummy World, at the Hungarian Natural History Museum. Be sure to check out more oddities in SlashGear's wild world of Science.
