Speculation over LeBron James’ future has intensified as he enters his 23rd NBA season. The 40-year-old opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, marking the first time during his Los Angeles Lakers tenure that he didn’t sign a multi-year extension when faced with the ability to do so.

LeBron James drew a lot of heat for that, as he seemingly started it when he joined forces with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. Technically, though, the Celtics' Big 3 of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen came first.

One NBA executive said that LeBron James shouldn't have exercised his player option with the Lakers if he wants to win another championship.
