Emergency services are at the scene of a large block of flats in the Bronx, New York City, where part of the building has collapsed due to a massive gas explosion this morning
A New York City high-rise partially collapsed after a suspected gas explosion. The city’s fire department said it was responding to a report of a gas explosion that collapsed an incinerator shaft in the 20-storey apartment block in the Bronx on Wednesday. Authorities said no residential units were affected and there were no reports of injuries.
Volunteer Fire Chief Mark Ballmer has confirmed that a heating and cooling company was installing new equipment and did not fully shut off the gas. The oversight led to a water heater igniting, triggering an explosion.
