The military-led government of Burma showcased a colossal statue of a sitting Buddha on Friday, set to be consecrated on August 1st, serving as a symbol of nationalism.

The statue, found in the heart of the Yakjon-ri archaeological site, is an image of Amitābha Buddha. Ceramic and tile finds at the site confirm that the artwork dates back to the early 10th century.

An inscription found nearby says that they were buried Jun. 22, 1013 and belong to the Buddha. It is not certain if the statues were buried along with the remains.
