While most species appear bald, some have more fur than others. For example, the pink fairy armadillo is mostly furry with a little shell, while the nine-banded armadillo appears bald.

Furry hedgehogs are teardrop-shaped, with faces ending in a long, narrow snout, not unlike a mini armadillo without a shell, or something halfway between a mouse and a shrew.

The second species, Hylomys vorax, is smaller than H. macarong at only 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) long to the other's 14 centimeters (5.5 inches), with a completely black tail.

David Hu and his colleagues at the Georgia Institute of Technology studied 16 different furry species with the help of a local zoo. The animals tested include dogs, mice, tigers and bears.
