The oldest cave art in the world has been discovered, but scientists don’t think it was humans who did it. Cave paintings dating back 24,000 years have previously been uncovered in Spain.
The cave painting in Indonesia is also the world’s oldest known evidence of storytelling in art, according to an international team of researchers who used a new dating technique.
It’s among more than a dozen other dated cave paintings on Sulawesi that now rival the earliest cave art in Spain and France, long believed to be the oldest on earth.
There are other images of pigs in the cave as well. The researchers interpreted the painting as a narrative scene, which they said would make it the oldest-known evidence of storytelling in art.
