But these imitation animations aren’t the work of famed Japanese company Studio Ghibli: they’re from ChatGPT. And that has some copyright experts sounding the alarm.
In the 1990s, tech companies used utopian language to sell the internet. The AI industry is taking a different approach.
Studio Ghibli in Japan declined to comment Friday. As users posted their Ghibli-style images on social media, Miyazaki’s previous comments on AI animation also began to resurface.
Reps for Studio Ghibli in North America declined to comment. However, Hayao Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, has previously expressed strong disapproval of AI-generated animation.
The number of Americans that use AI chatbot ChatGPT today has nearly doubled since the summer of 2023, reaching 34% of all U.S. adults.
This new trend follows on from another major ongoing trend — the ChatGPT Studio Ghibli art creation, wherein people ask the AI software to reimagine them as characters in Hayao Miyazaki’s world.
