NEW YORK (AP) — A jury has awarded $116 million to the family of one of five people killed in an open-door helicopter that crashed and sank in a New York City river, leaving passengers trapped in their safety harnesses.

When an open-door tourist helicopter crashed into the East River, Trevor Cadigan, 26, and four other passengers were unable to escape from cumbersome safety harnesses.

A New York jury awarded the family of a Dallas man killed in a 2018 helicopter crash a record $116 million in a civil lawsuit this week. Trevor Cadigan, 26, drowned after a tour helicopter crashed and overturned in the East River on March 11, 2018. Four others, including Dallas firefighter Brian McDaniel, 26, were killed in the crash.
