Teams rarely trade closers while in the postseason hunt, and Doval, who’s under club control through 2027, remains a valuable late-inning weapon. However, Sammon and Baggerly noted that “subtracting from the bullpen could allow the Giants to address other pressing roster weaknesses, potentially down the stretch and in future seasons,”.
The Giants have a huge decision to make prior to the trade deadline, and Buster Posey is going to have to figure it out quickly.
Kansas City's Seth Lugo was linked to a few teams this deadline season and he was a big part of the rumor mill. However on Sunday night, ESPN's Jeff Passan broke the news that the Royals had signed Lugo to a multiyear extension, taking him off of the board entirely.
The Giants enter Sunday’s matchup against the New York Mets at 54–51, sitting 2.5 games behind the final Wild Card spot. In June, they added ex-Red Sox superstar Rafael Devers, but it has yet to pay dividends. Devers himself is hitting just .244 with four home runs and 15 RBIs since arriving in San Francisco.
The Giants would much rather forget about the dreadful series that they recently concluded against the Mets, in which they were swept.
As the trade deadline for the San Francisco Giants quickly approaches, the team seems likely to try to make another upgrade or two.
