The Constitutional Court reinstated Han Duck-soo as acting President, as a ruling on President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment is still to come.

South Korea's acting President Han Duck-soo said on Tuesday that any decision by the Constitutional Court on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol should be respected, according to media reports.

At least 27 people have died in what have grown into the largest wildfires in South Korea's history. Most of those who have lost their lives were in their 60s and 70s - in other words, those who struggled to escape the fast-moving infernos.

A combination of an aging society and a reliance on temporary workers meant older people were disproportionately on the frontlines tackling South Korea's devastating wildfires this week - and paid a disproportionate price.
