Peoples, a senior board member on MERDI and former president of the group, was chief executive of Butte-Silver Bow when the Anaconda smelter closed, and later the Berkeley Pit copper mine operation.

Between the Berkeley Pit and the dispersed mine workings which created Butte, there will be a need to treat the groundwater for a long period of time.
