In a stunning, glowing image, NASA has captured the moment that Boom Supersonic’s XB-1 demonstrator broke the sound barrier during tests last month.

Boom Supersonic and NASA just dropped an incredible photo of the XB-1 breaking the sound barrier over the Mojave Desert. Using Schlieren photography, they captured air distortions that are usually invisible to the naked eye.

NASA has captured an image of a supersonic civilian jet breaking the sound barrier during a test flight over the Mojave Desert in California in February. The photo, released Monday by the plane’s manufacturer, Boom Supersonic, shows the XB-1 aircraft during its second supersonic flight on Feb. 10.

The data discovered might lead the way for supersonic commercial flights without sonic booms, the company said in the news release.
