The reaction was noticeably different on Friday than it was after the last time Israel attacked Iran, when several countries provided backup and resources.
Thousands of activists from around the world are expected to descend on Egypt on Thursday for a “Global March to Gaza,” a movement aiming to break the Israeli blockade that has pushed the territory to the brink of famine.
The attack comes after decades of mutual hostility and a long-running shadow war of covert strikes and sabotage.
Yair Yaakov was kidnapped by Islamic Jihad in the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. The other hostage will be named later, the Israeli military said.
The bodies of two deceased hostages were recovered from southern Gaza in a military operation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet security agency announced Wednesday evening.
Egyptian authorities have detained or deported foreign nationals arriving for the Global March to Gaza. Despite organizing efforts to pressure Israel to end its blockade, many activists faced detention.
"Hezbollah is committed to the ceasefire agreement, even though Israel has not respected this commitment over the past period," the spokesperson said. "It continues to kill, assassinate, and attack areas, including entering border villages and remaining at the five points."
