Rivian’s R2 vehicles will be powered by batteries made domestically in the US by South Korea’s LG Energy Solution, the company announced in its third quarter earnings report.

South Korea's LG Energy Solution on Friday said its subsidiary LG Energy Solution Arizona has signed a battery supply agreement with U.S.-based automotive manufacturer Rivian .

LG Energy Solution announced on Friday that it will supply Rivian with cylindrical-shaped battery cells for use in the R2 electric compact crossover that Rivian previewed in March. The battery cells, which Rivian previously announced will feature a 4695 format (46-millimeter diameter and 95-mm height), will be supplied by a plant in Arizona.

Rivian announced a strategic supply agreement with LG Energy Solution (LGES) to power its next-generation midsize electric vehicle platform, underpinning the company’s R2 midsize SUV. Under the agreement, LG Energy Solution will provide Rivian with its advanced 4695 cylindrical batteries for over five years, totaling 67GWh.
