Kentucky issues over 150 different types of passenger and motorcycle license plates. License plates can be categorized into the following types: Regular (Standard Issue), Special, University, Independent College, Military, Military Motorcycle, Miscellaneous, Disabled, and Special Motorcycle Plates.

In 2023, the Kentucky State Police changed the design and format of their license plates for the marked fleet. The new plates were completely flat silkscreened aluminum. KENTUCKY was inscribed in black between the upper mounting holes.

Personalized plate character combinations may only appear on one plate at any given time. The letters “I”, “O”, “Q”, and “U”, are no longer available for plate personalization. This will be consistent with the visibility rules already in place for standard plates.
