Black bear sightings have been confirmed in 55 of the 88 Ohio counties since 1993 (Figure 3). The Division of Wildlife confirmed. 77 black bear sightings in 2019, 76 in 2020, and 61 in 2021.

Black bear sightings in Ohio have been increasing since the Division of Wildlife began tracking sightings in 1993. In 2022, 285 sightings were reported in 52 counties, 161 of which were confirmed based on the presence of evidence such as photos or tracks.

Jun 3, 2024 · Ohio’s bear sightings spiked in 2022. ODW confirmed 161 black bear sightings that year, up from 61 in 2021. Sightings of female bears with cubs are also up, which paint a positive future for reestablished bear populations, especially in Northeast Ohio.

Unfortunately, unregulated hunting and habitat loss rendered bears extirpated from Ohio by 1850. Today, Ohio is again home to a small but growing population of black bears. Ohio’s bear population is estimated to be anywhere from 50-100 individual bears.
