The keep at Carlisle Castle was either completed or rebuilt from scratch on the orders of David I of Scotland. Henry I of England had previously started the building of the keep. The 2nd floor which houses the chamber, originally had a high ceiling before the keep was remodelled with an extra floor being added in the 16th century.
