This coal mine was opened in 1862, by the Export Coal Company. Providing jobs to 100 men, red ash coal was mined for domestic use. Eventually shuttering and changing hands to the Montevallo Domestic Coal Co. it was operated a few more years until it changed hands once again to the Little Gem Coal Company.
