Last Lifts of the Lift Bridge: The iconic 1914 Fairport Lift Bridge, spanning the Erie Canal, closes tomorrow at 7:00am and will remain closed for more than a year as a major rehabilitation commences. Today marked the final day of lifts for boating traffic, the bridge will remain in the “Up” position during the project—boat traffic will be unaffected. Back in Business: The 1914 Fairport Lift Bridge has finally reopened after 22 months of undergoing a major rehabilitation. At 11:45am the bridge opened to allow vehicles to pass over the Erie Canal—the span had been in the “up” position for the duration of the project. This bridge is not only one of the most unique along this historic waterway, but in the world.
