Gray whales migrate through California's waters between December and April, from the summer feeding grounds in the Arctic to their calving grounds in the lagoons of Mexico's Baja Peninsula. They undertake one of the longest annual migrations of any mammal, traveling 12,000 miles round trip! So far this population of gray whales seem healthier than previous years, when they didn't find enough food to eat during summer. Whale lice: the unexpected passengers on North American Right Whales. North American Right Whales are born with a unique patch of toughened thick skin known as callosities. As the whale grows, the callosities grow to raised bumps on the whale’s head. The callosities then become home to tiny crustaceans known as cyamids, or whale lice!
