Your child’s IEP eligibility is NOT the same thing as a medical diagnosis. And I wish more parents knew the difference. 👀 👇 Comment MAMA and I’ll send you the link to my book, What Now, Mama?, where I share what I wish I knew when we first started navigating autism, evaluations, therapies and IEPs. A school evaluation looks at whether your child meets educational eligibility criteria and what they need to access their education. A medical or clinical evaluation can answer different questions a

You signed the IEP. And when you get home, you realize that you signed something you don’t understand. You didn’t ask all the questions you had. You were rushed. Shuffled out the door. And now you’re afraid another year is going to go by without the right help for your child. It doesn’t have to be this way. The school doesn’t go into that room alone. They go in with four or six or sometimes 12 people. You don’t have to go in alone. www.yourchild.org #DisabilityParenting #autism #advocate #autism

POV: You finally find an IEP resource that doesn’t make you feel like you need a law degree. 😂📚 I’ve been building something for the parents who are tired of feeling confused, overwhelmed, or completely lost during IEP meetings. But now I’m debating the name… IEPs Without Confusion or IEPs Without Tears 😭😂 Which one would make YOU stop scrolling? 👀👇 And if you’re an IEP parent… what’s the ONE thing you wish someone had explained to you sooner? #IEP #IEPParent #SpecialEducation #SpecialNeed

The “IEPs are ruining education” conversation is missing a system critique, as usual. IEPs don’t lower expectations. Accommodations don’t mean a child gets to “take advantage.” And disabled scholars aren’t responsible for classrooms being under-resourced. If schools don’t have enough teachers, paraprofessionals, special educators, counselors, and other supports to meet the needs of ALL scholars, maybe we should be asking where the funding is going. We don't need to pit scholars with disabilities

“I believe parents should absolutely walk into an IEP meeting ready to collaborate. But collaborative does not mean passive. You can appreciate the teacher. You can respect the team. And you can still say: ‘Show me the data that supports that recommendation.’ Those things are not opposites. #specialeducationteacher #specialeducation #autismmom #specialneedsparent #IEP #Autismmom

If you are going to blatantly lie to a parent in an IEP meeting, you should probably reconsider doing it while I’m sitting at the table. Especially when you are the district representative serving as the LEA. I will call it out in the meeting. But I’m also not going to let it disappear when the meeting ends. I will follow up in writing documenting exactly what was stated, what the actual facts or documentation show, and why the statement was inaccurate. And depending on the seriousness of the si
