To teach reading: 1.) Teach the sounds of the letters more than the letter names. 2.) Use lowercase letters more than uppercase. 3.) Always put the vowel at the beginning or the middle for emerging readers. 4.) Teach them that every letter (grapheme) has a job, or a sound. 5.) Use the pencil writing blending technique as taught in the Learn Reading program.
