During the 100 degree weather we experience at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge most of the animals, including the human type, seek out shade. The prairie dogs nap down in their burrows, the otters wallow in the creek, the bison loiter under the oaks and the elk take ease in the cool mud of the lake. The original elk native to the Wichitas was known as Merriam’s Elk, and the last one was killed in 1881. With the possible exception of a bull received from Kansas, all of the elk re-introduced

How does the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge achieve genetic diversity in its bison herd? By selectively moving animals from one herd to another within the Fish and Wildlife Service and between other herds across the nation through the Bison Conservation Initiative, specific genes may be moved to counter the effects of gene loss that naturally occurs in small populations over time.
