Peter the Anteater. Peter the Anteater became UCI’s mascot in 1965 after of a vote by the student body in which the anteater won 56 percent of the vote, beating out the likes of roadrunners, unicorns, and centaurs. The anteater’s victory came as a result of a student-run campaign, in which the cartoon anteater from the comic strip “B.C.” was suggested (one holdover from the comic strip: the sound effect for when an anteater catches an ant, “ZOT!”, became a common chant at sports events). A lesser tamandua, also known as the collared anteater, foraging. The collared anteater uses its powerful forearms in self-defense. If it is threatened in a tree it grasps a branch with its hindfeet and tail, leaving its arms and long, curved claws free for combat. If attacked on the ground, this anteater backs up against a rock or a tree and grabs the opponent with its forearms. Today is World Anteater Day — a perfect time to celebrate the amazing role that giant anteaters (and their smaller relatives) play in our ecosystems. The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is a highly specialized insectivore: it uses its powerful claws to dig into ant and termite mounds, then flicks out a long, sticky tongue to feast on thousands of insects every day. This niche makes it a vital natural pest controller, helping balance insect populations and support healthy soil. At Xenart

The Giant Anteater – The Silent Slayer of Ant Kingdom At first glance, it looked like someone in a bear costume dancing around — but once I saw it devastating an entire ant colony with that unbelievably long tongue, it was clear: this was the Giant Anteater. Just like the name says, this is an oversized version of a normal anteater — XXL size! With no teeth but a never-ending hunger, it slurps up over 30,000 ants and termites a day. Native to the Americas, it’s a calm creature — until provoked.

Giant anteaters, the largest of the four anteater species, can range from 6 to 8 feet in length and boast a tongue that extends 2 feet further! With a highly developed sense of smell, they can identify a particular ant or termite species before using their large claws and sticky tongue to reach into the insect's nest. World Anteater Day celebrates the unique adaptations of these amazing animals and raises awareness for their conservation. Did you know that an anteaters tongue is nearly 2 feet long and covered in sticky saliva? This helps them reach insects and other food in long, skinny openings such as termite mounds. How can you help anteaters? Use caution when traveling through grassy areas! In their native habitat of Central and South America, anteaters are at risk of collisions. Closer to home, drivers s
