Fall Blackberry Pruning! Blackberry plants grow fruit as well as new canes during the growing season. The new canes are what continue to grow and produce fruit the following year. After a cane has produced it will most likely die back to allow the newer canes to grow, and you can help out this process by pruning. Blackberries, freeze in winter? Try to do this. For the first two years, I did not trim the leaves from the blackberry bushes in the fall. Many bushes did not survive the winter; they froze and died. Three years ago, as an experiment, I tried to cut off all the leaves. To my surprise, not a single bush froze or died during the following winter.
