During the early 1900s, many Louisiana creoles moved to Texas after the great Mississippi flood. They typically migrated to rural areas of Jefferson, Liberty and Harris counties. Among them were Sam GOUDEAU and his family. He was born on September 1, 1877 in GODEAU, Louisiana to Felix GODEAU and Rosa BUSH , both born as free people of color (not born a slave prior to the emancipation of all slaves). He died on May 6, 1941, in Crosby, Texas. He was married on February 11, 1902, to Marie Odelia TH

These Creoles of Color from the Auzenne, Lemon, Fournier, Barnabé, and other families of Prairie Laurent, Louisiana, formed a powerful alliance. Their bond was so strong that many of their descendants still live on ancestral land that predates the Louisiana Purchase. This legacy is reflected in the IFBS Lodge, a testament to their enduring unity and cultural resilience.#CreoleHeritage 🇸🇳 🇫🇷 #LouisianaHistory 📜 #AncestralLand 🌿 #PrairieLaurent #FamilyLegacy 👣 #IFBSLodge #GenealogyResearch

👀 What do you think? The Cajuns, tracing their roots to the Acadian people from Western France, were reshaped in Louisiana after their British-enforced departure from Nova Scotia. Resisting British authority, these French-speaking exiles found a new home in Louisiana’s rural landscapes, evolving into what we now know as Cajuns. Meanwhile, the Creoles, born from a mix of French, Spanish, African, and Native ancestries, are closely associated with New Orleans’ urban culture, yet they also have de

When it comes to looks in Louisiana Creole families, you never know which genes you’ll get, just like in the OZAN family (Auzenne, Ozan, Ozenne, or however your branch spells it). One of my biggest observations when I started researching my family history was how much appearances can vary, even within the same bloodline. That variation has, at times, created confusion and division in how we label ourselves as people of color.Unfortunately, these differences in appearance have also led to deep in

Louisiana Tried to Erase the Creoles In 1921, Louisiana banned French in public schools. Creole children were punished for speaking their own language, and families stopped passing it down out of fear. Before that, Creoles of color published their own newspapers and documented their history during Reconstruction. This wasn’t about education. It was about control. Comment Creole if this is your story. Creole identity Louisiana, 1921 Louisiana Constitution, French language ban Louisiana, L Union n

They Erased Creole Overnight In 1970, Louisiana stopped recognizing Creole as an identity and forced families to choose Black or white on official records. A culture built from French, Spanish, African, and Native roots was erased with a change in paperwork. White Creoles Erased Their Black Roots Louisiana’s Creole identity was multiracial from the beginning. French settlers, Africans, Native Americans, and Caribbean refugees built it together. When writers exposed those blood ties, white Creole elites fought back and rewrote the story. This wasn’t confusion. It was erasure. Comment if your family history is more complicated than they admit. George Washington Cable Louisiana, Creole identity Louisiana, Haitian Revolution refugees Louisiana, white Cr
