When you hear there is only one native bird species extinct from western Montana, only one that used to be present in the western side of the continental divide that is no longer here, I am guessing what first comes to mind is some obscure songbird or some rare species. As logical as those assumptions would be, they are incorrect. It is, in fact, sharp-tailed grouse that we are missing on the western side of Montana, good ol’ “prairie chickens.” Their range used to extend from the Bitterroot Val
