Marie-Thérèse Charlotte was born in 1778 as the first child of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI—never knowing she would become the lone survivor of her family. When the Revolution erupted, she was only a girl. By 14, she was imprisoned inside the Temple, watching her world fall apart piece by piece. Her father was executed in January 1793. Her mother in October. Her aunt Élisabeth soon after. Her older brother Louis-Joseph had already died at 7, and her infant sister Sophie-Béatrice was gone too.
