Dunblane Cathedral stands on a site that has been a place of worship for over 1000 years. This sacred site dates back to at least the 9th century, likely founded by monks fleeing Viking raids with relics of St. Blane. Early Christian presence is evident in 7th- or 8th-century Pictish cross-slabs still housed within. By 1155, Dunblane had a bishop, and in 1237, Bishop Clement oversaw the construction of a new cathedral to replace an earlier, unfinished structure. The result was a striking design:
