Remembering John Smith Hurt (March 8, 1893 – November 2, 1966), known as Mississippi John Hurt, was an American country blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist.Raised in Avalon, Mississippi, Hurt taught himself to play the guitar around the age of nine. He worked as a sharecropper and began playing at dances and parties, singing to a melodious fingerpicked accompaniment. His first recordings, made for Okeh Records in 1928, were commercial failures, and he continued to work as a farmer. Dick Spot

“Richland Woman Blues” by Mississippi John Hurt was recorded during the sessions for his 1963 album Folk Songs and Blues. Recording took place at Wynwood Recording Studio in Washington, D.C. on March 24, 26, 29, and April 2, 1963. On the recording John bends the B string to scrape against the E string like a car horn, but I haven’t quite yet figured out a way to do that with the lap style slide. My wife always laughs at the line: “Richland women say, any dude will do”. #mississippijohnhurt #slid
