THE BLACK NAZARENE The Black Nazarene, or Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno, is a sacred image of Jesus carrying a cross. It is kept in Quiapo Church, Manila, and is deeply loved by Filipinos. It came from Mexico in 1606, brought by the Augustinian Recollects. Made of mesquite wood, its dark color may be from natural wood tones or from a fire during its journey.
